A 21-year-old man from Cork city, Ryan Kennefick, found himself in hot water as his offences were described as “messy” by a sentencing judge at Cork District Court. The finalisation of the matters has been adjourned until July 2, giving Kennefick some time to reflect on his actions.
Judge Mary Dorgan expressed her concerns about Kennefick’s behaviour, stating that his interactions with the guards were “inappropriate in the extreme.” The judge deemed his offences as messy and urged him to reconsider his actions.
According to Sergeant John Kelleher, the incidents involving Kennefick took place at St Vincent’s Hostel on Anglesea Terrace. On March 12, gardaí were called to the hostel where Kennefick, along with another man, was causing a disturbance. Kennefick’s response to the authorities was aggressive and disrespectful, shouting obscenities and derogatory terms.
Additionally, Kennefick was involved in a theft incident at Topaz on Monahan Road on October 6, 2023. He was reported to have stolen items such as Lucozade, chocolate-flavoured Yazoo drink, and tea bags. These actions added to his already long list of 23 convictions.
Defence solicitor Daithí Ó Donnabháin shed some light on Kennefick’s situation, attributing his behaviour to the consumption of alcohol at the time of the offences. He mentioned that there was tension between Kennefick and another resident at St Vincent’s Hostel, leading to the altercation.
Ó Donnabháin highlighted that Kennefick is currently at a crossroads in his life, indicating that he may be in need of guidance and support to steer him in the right direction. Judge Dorgan agreed to adjourn the sentencing for a month, giving Kennefick a chance to reflect on his actions and make amends.
Furthermore, Kennefick faces another charge related to an alleged trespassing incident at Salt restaurant on Victoria Rd, Cork, on March 29, 2024. The prosecution claims that nothing was taken during this incident, but it adds to Kennefick’s legal troubles.
