A devastating incident occurred last Friday afternoon in Cebu City, resulting in the tragic death of a 71-year-old woman. Paulina Pantonial Gonzales, a resident of Sitio Maracas in Barangay Lahug, Cebu City, was struck by a truck while crossing R. Duterte Street in Sitio Banawa, Barangay Guadalupe.
The driver of the Fuso Canter truck, identified as Edgar Despi Espinosa, 59, of Mountain Breeze Subdivision in Barangay Tisa, Cebu City, recounted the heart-wrenching moment when the accident took place. Gonzales was in the midst of crossing the road when she suddenly lost her balance. Espinosa, in an attempt to avoid hitting her, swerved to the right. Despite his efforts, the truck’s left side mirror collided with Gonzales, causing her to fall to the pavement and sustain severe injuries.
Following the collision, Gonzales was promptly rushed to the Cebu City Medical Center for urgent medical attention. Tragically, she was declared dead upon arrival at the hospital, leaving her loved ones and the community in mourning.
Espinosa, now facing the consequences of the unfortunate incident, is currently detained at the Traffic Enforcement Unit. He is charged with reckless imprudence resulting in the untimely death of Paulina Pantonial Gonzales.
As the community grapples with the loss of a beloved member, the authorities are conducting a thorough investigation to determine the circumstances that led to this fatal accident. The family and friends of Gonzales are left to grieve and seek solace amidst this heartbreaking tragedy.
