It’s challenging to find unity during these politically turbulent times.

However, the residents of Harmony, a small town in Wisconsin, believe they have found the solution: actually living in Harmony.

Located on rich farmland and residential subdivisions near Janesville, Harmony Township spans 24 square miles and is known for embodying its name. It serves as a microcosm of the political landscape in Wisconsin, a swing state that has been a crucial battleground in recent elections.

Since 2000, Harmony has consistently backed the winning candidate in all 13 presidential and gubernatorial races, showcasing a unique knack for predicting electoral outcomes.

Town board Chair, Jeff Klenz, reflects on the town’s ethos, stating, “Everybody lives in harmony in Harmony Township.”

With a demographic makeup mirroring that of the state, Harmony is predominantly white, with a notable multiracial population. However, the absence of a Black community sets it apart from the broader Wisconsin demographic.

Despite Wisconsin’s political volatility, Harmony’s ability to pick winners is remarkable. In recent elections, the town’s voting pattern has closely mirrored the state’s overall outcome.

Donald Trump narrowly carried Harmony in 2016, while Joe Biden secured victory in 2020. This reflects the town’s diverse political leanings and the broader trend of close electoral contests in Wisconsin.

Loren Hanson, a long-time resident and retired General Motors worker, expresses uncertainty about supporting Trump for a third time, citing concerns about the former president’s legal troubles.

Reflecting on his voting decision, Hanson remarks, “Sometimes you vote for the lesser of two evils, and this year I don’t know which is which.”

Klenz, a retired police officer, stands by his support for Trump, highlighting the former president’s economic policies. He acknowledges concerns about the judicial system but maintains his allegiance to Trump.

Despite differing political views, Harmony residents emphasize mutual respect and cooperation, transcending political divides.

Lucille Vickerman, a retired nurse and Biden voter, underscores the town’s spirit of acceptance and understanding, stating, “We vote almost half and half, but we don’t hate each other.”

The town’s unique political dynamics can be attributed to a culture of open dialogue and a focus on community issues rather than national politics.

Town clerk, Tim Tollefson, underscores Harmony’s approach to political differences, stating, “I don’t think people take that part of politics and put it into whether people can be friends or not.”

Despite the broader political polarization, Harmony serves as a beacon of unity and understanding in an increasingly divided nation.

Vickerman, reflecting on her experience in Harmony, expresses concerns about the current political climate and the future of democracy, highlighting the need for bipartisan cooperation and dialogue.

As Harmony continues to navigate political differences with grace and respect, it sets an example for communities across the country to follow.
