In a shocking incident in Muzaffargarh, Pakistan, a seminary teacher has been arrested for the alleged rape of two minor students. The accused reportedly threatened the victims with severe consequences if they disclosed the assault, as per a report by Dawn.

The complaint was lodged by Jalal Din, who stated that his son and nephew, aged between 10-12 years, were attending Madressah Yaseen at Chak No 143/ML for several months. The boys revealed to Din that their teacher had sexually assaulted them at the seminary and had warned them against reporting the incident to anyone.

Upon receiving the complaint, the Daira Din Pannah police registered a case against the suspect under sections 376-iii and 377-B of the law. The authorities have apprehended the accused, and the victims have been taken to the hospital for a medical examination, as reported by Dawn.

Alarming Statistics on Child Abuse in Pakistan

The incident sheds light on the pervasive issue of child abuse in Pakistan. According to the ‘Cruel Numbers 2023’ report released by the non-profit organisation Sahil in collaboration with the National Commission for Human Rights (NCHR), a staggering 4,213 cases of child abuse were reported in the year 2023.

The report highlights that, on average, 11 children face abuse each day in the country. The forms of abuse documented include sexual abuse, abduction, missing children, and child marriages. Shockingly, the data reveals that children as young as 0-5 years old have fallen victim to sexual abuse.

Gender Disparities and Perpetrator Profiles

Out of the total reported cases, 53 per cent of the victims were girls, while 47 per cent were boys. Children between the ages of 6 and 15 were identified as the most vulnerable to abuse, with a higher number of boys than girls reported as victims within this age group.

The report categorises the perpetrators of child sexual abuse, with acquaintances being the primary culprits, followed by relatives, family members, strangers, and women abettors. Geographically, Punjab reported the highest number of cases, accounting for 75 per cent of the total, followed by Sindh, Islamabad, KP, Balochistan, PoK, and GB.

Efforts to Combat Child Abuse

The ‘Cruel Numbers 2023’ report indicates that 91 per cent of the total reported cases were registered with the police, demonstrating an active role played by law enforcement in addressing the issue of child abuse. The data also reveals specific incidents of child sexual abuse, abduction, missing children, and child marriages, underscoring the urgent need for intervention and prevention strategies.

NGOs in Pakistan have been monitoring cases of violence against children, including injuries and deaths among those up to 18 years old. The data collected serves to raise awareness about the prevalence of child abuse and the importance of safeguarding the well-being of vulnerable children in society.

As the authorities in Muzaffargarh continue to investigate the case of the seminary teacher accused of raping his students, it is essential for the community to remain vigilant and take proactive measures to protect children from such heinous crimes.
