MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A shocking incident unfolded at a Whitehaven gas station on Thursday afternoon when a carjacker forced a driver out of his vehicle, nearly dragging him along as the thief sped off in the stolen car.

The stolen Nissan Maxima was later involved in a collision with two Memphis Police Department squad cars, leading to the apprehension of a teenager, identified as 18-year-old Isaiah Hawkins.

Hawkins now faces multiple charges, including carjacking, aggravated robbery, and aggravated assault on a first responder.

The harrowing carjacking took place at a Marathon gas station on Elvis Presley Boulevard and was captured on camera. The victim recounted how the carjacker brandished a black handgun, demanded money, and forced him out of the vehicle.

Despite the victim’s attempt to retrieve something from his car, the carjacker swiftly took off, narrowly avoiding causing injury to the victim.

Following the carjacking, police located the stolen vehicle near McLemore Avenue and Orleans Street. A pursuit ensued, during which the driver, identified as Hawkins, deliberately collided with two marked police cars along Mississippi Boulevard.

Ultimately, Hawkins abandoned the stolen Maxima at Louisville Avenue and New Chicago Street in North Memphis, where the car continued in motion and crashed into a tree on Capital Avenue.

After a brief foot chase, Hawkins was apprehended by law enforcement officers, with a firearm found in close proximity. Additional charges against Hawkins include employment of a firearm during a dangerous felony, evading arrest, and driving with a revoked license.

Notably, a companion of Hawkins reportedly fled the scene in the red Nissan from the gas station, but Hawkins remains the sole individual in custody. He is set to appear in court on Monday to face the charges brought against him.
