NEW DELHI: Tragedy struck as four Indian MBBS students lost their lives in a heart-wrenching incident of drowning in a river near St. Petersburg, Russia. The victims, two boys and two girls aged between 18 to 20, were students at Novgorod State University in Veliky Novgorod. The Indian mission in Russia is working closely with local authorities to expedite the return of their bodies to their families.
According to reports, the incident occurred when a female Indian student encountered trouble in the river Volkhov and her four companions attempted to rescue her. Unfortunately, the rescue efforts turned fatal, claiming the lives of the four students.
Russia’s Jalgaon district collector, Ayush Prasad, expressed his condolences and stated, “A very unfortunate incident has come to light in which five students have drowned in a river near St. Petersburg in Russia, of which one student’s life has been saved by the authorities in Russia and four students have died.”
The Indian Consulate in St. Petersburg is actively collaborating with local authorities in Veliky Novgorod to ensure the swift repatriation of the deceased students’ bodies to their grieving families. The consulate has reached out to the bereaved families, offering them all necessary assistance and support during this difficult time.
In response to the tragedy, the Consulate General of India in St. Petersburg released a statement saying, “Proper medical and psychological treatment is being provided to the girl student who was saved. These students were pursuing medical education at Veliky Novgorod State University.”
The consulate also extended its sincere condolences to the families of the deceased students and assured them of continued support throughout the repatriation process. The Indian authorities are working tirelessly to ensure that the mortal remains of the students are brought back to India in accordance with international protocols.
As the bodies of the four students are being prepared for repatriation, the Indian community in Russia and back home in India mourns the untimely loss of promising young lives.
