Accident – Death – Obituary News :

Imphal, Jun 8 (PTI) – In response to reports of arson and attacks on two police outposts in Jiribam district by suspected militants, the Manipur government has taken action by transferring Jiribam SP A Ghanashyam Sharma. The Jiribam superintendent of police has been reassigned to the post of additional director of the Manipur Police Training College, according to an order issued by the Department of Personnel and Administrative Reforms.

M Pradip Singh, who was previously serving as the additional director of the police training college, will now assume the role of senior superintendent of police in Jiribam district. This transfer comes in the wake of the recent incidents of violence in the region.

Earlier today, police outposts of Jiri Mukh and Choto Bekra, as well as the Goakhal forest beat office, were set ablaze by suspected militants. Additionally, more than 70 houses in villages such as Lamtai khunou, Dibong Khunou, Nunkhal, and Begra were torched, forcing residents to seek shelter in a relief camp.

To address the escalating situation, a contingent of over 70 personnel was airlifted from Imphal to Jiribam to support security forces in their operations against militants. The government is taking swift action to restore peace and order in the affected areas.

On Friday, 239 Meitei individuals, predominantly women and children, were evacuated from peripheral areas of Jiribam and relocated to shelters at the Multi Sports Complex in the district. The authorities are prioritising the safety and well-being of residents amidst the unrest.

The recent tensions in Jiribam began after the tragic death of a 59-year-old man, Soibam Saratkumar Singh, who went missing on June 6 while tending to his farm. His body, bearing wounds from a sharp object, was discovered later, prompting outrage and protests in the community.

Prohibitory orders have been imposed in the area as a precautionary measure, following incidents of arson and public unrest. Locals have also demanded the return of licensed firearms that were temporarily confiscated during recent elections, adding to the existing tensions.

Jiribam, known for its diverse ethnic composition including Meiteis, Muslims, Nagas, Kukis, and non-Manipuris, has historically been peaceful amidst the ongoing ethnic conflict in Manipur. However, the recent incidents have highlighted the fragility of peace in the region.

The ethnic strife between Imphal valley-based Meiteis and hills-based Kukis has resulted in over 200 fatalities and displaced thousands of individuals. The government is committed to addressing the root causes of conflict and ensuring the safety and security of all residents in Manipur.
