The body of a man who disappeared while on an out-of-state motorcycle journey has been discovered, according to California deputies.
William Robert Knight, 73, who was on a motorcycle excursion to Idaho, was found deceased in a river south of Alturas, around 350 miles northeast of his San Ramon residence, the Modoc County Sheriff’s Office stated in a June 5 news release posted on Facebook.
Knight had been in touch with his family until Thursday, May 30, when he informed them that he was in Lakeview, Oregon.
However, he did not communicate with his family on Friday, the day before his scheduled return to San Ramon.
“He’s an adept and experienced rider who usually stays in contact daily,” a friend wrote on Facebook. “He was well prepared with a new phone, new tires, etc.”
After Knight failed to show up on Sunday, June 2, his family reported him missing, as per the sheriff’s office.
Deputies commenced a search in Alturas where Knight’s cellphone last pinged on Monday, June 3.
Several agencies and Knight’s family continued the search the following day, according to the sheriff’s office.
At approximately 6 p.m., a motorist contacted 911 to report that they had discovered a body, identified as Knight, in the river near Highway 395, deputies said.
Later that day, Knight’s motorcycle was also located in the river close to where his body was discovered.
“Just lost a good friend and hiking partner,” a Facebook user wrote, alluding to Knight’s passing. “He never met a trail or road he didn’t like.”
“He will be dearly missed by many,” another friend expressed on Facebook.
The California Highway Patrol is investigating the incident, and the cause and manner of Knight’s death are still under investigation, according to the sheriff’s office.
Alturas is situated about a 300-mile drive northeast of Sacramento.
