A 20-year-old woman from Georgia who had been missing for the past nine months has been confirmed dead after authorities discovered her skeletal remains in Tennessee earlier this year.
The Cobb County Police Department announced that the skeletal remains belonged to Maury-Ange Faith Martinez, a resident of Alpharetta, Georgia. Martinez was reported missing in Gwinnett County on August 28, 2023.
The remains were found on January 5 near a Volkswagen plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee, more than 100 miles northwest of where she was last seen in Cobb County, Georgia.
Investigation Ongoing
Authorities have not disclosed the circumstances of Martinez’s disappearance or whether foul play was involved in her death. The Hamilton County Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed the identity of the remains as Martinez.
The investigation into the 20-year-old’s disappearance is ongoing, and police are urging the public to come forward with any information about her case or last known whereabouts.
Martinez was initially believed to have been last seen leaving the Gwinnett County Jail in August, but further investigation revealed that she was last seen near Powers Ferry Road in Cobb County.
Mother’s Heartbreak
Martinez’s mother, Anita Darling, expressed her devastation upon learning that the remains belonged to her daughter. She recounted the last time she saw Martinez and the events leading up to her disappearance.
Darling recalled the day Martinez went missing, noting that her daughter had called to say she had caught a ride from someone else, which was unusual behaviour for her. Martinez did not respond to texts afterwards, leaving her mother concerned.
Darling described Martinez as someone who loved creating moments with loved ones, fashion, colour, and photography. She pleaded for anyone with information to come forward to provide closure for Martinez’s family.
