The District Attorney’s Office announced on Thursday that McClendon has been charged with one count of first-degree felony aggravated assault resulting in serious bodily injury with a gang enhancement, and one count of third-degree felony aggravated assault.
The incident unfolded on May 29, when two high school boys, accompanied by one of the boy’s mothers, attended a graduation ceremony. Prior to the commencement, the boys received threatening phone calls and text messages from unidentified numbers. Concerned for their safety, they sought assistance from a South Jordan Police Department school resource officer to escort them to the mother’s vehicle after the event.
As they made their way to one of the boys’ cars parked nearby, they noticed a car passing by and observing them in a suspicious manner. Before they could react, Keith Tyree McClendon and three other boys approached them. McClendon started pounding on the car window, causing a commotion.
Among the group was Hunter John Armstrong and the now-deceased 16-year-old. The situation escalated quickly, with McClendon allegedly attacking one of the boys with brass knuckles. Tragically, in the midst of the altercation, the 16-year-old sustained fatal stab wounds. Another boy was also injured and had to be taken to the hospital for treatment.
