Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Glenford Miller, who recently assumed command of the Jamaica Constabulary Force’s (JCF) Area One, narrowly escaped a potentially fatal encounter with gunmen in Montego Bay, St James, late Wednesday night.

Reports indicate that SSP Miller and his security detail were travelling along Kent Avenue when they noticed a suspiciously parked vehicle. Upon closer inspection, they were met with a hail of gunfire from unknown assailants.

The quick-thinking officers returned fire, prompting the attackers to flee the scene in their vehicle. Thankfully, no injuries were reported among the police team.

Local law enforcement in St James confirmed the incident, which occurred close to midnight, but declined to disclose further details citing security concerns.

Instances of violent confrontations between gang members and the police have become increasingly common in the area.

One such incident last year on Railway Lane in downtown Montego Bay resulted in a police officer sustaining gunshot wounds while attempting to apprehend a suspect. The perpetrator, 21-year-old Kirk Lawrence, was later arrested and charged with multiple offences.

National Security Minister Dr Horace Chang faced backlash for his controversial remarks urging law enforcement to use lethal force when faced with armed criminals. Despite the criticism, he stood by his stance, emphasising the need for criminals to surrender peacefully.
