A Kentucky State Police (KSP) trooper was attacked and had his firearm stolen after a multi-county vehicle and foot chase in the early hours of Friday morning. The suspect was eventually apprehended around 11 hours later.

Details of the Incident

On June 7, just after midnight, a KSP trooper tried to pull over a 2012 Chevrolet Equinox on Clarkstown Road in Nelson County for a traffic violation. The driver did not comply with the trooper’s signals and a pursuit ensued.

The chase continued onto Sulphur Lick Road in Marion County, where it came to a halt at a dead end. The driver abandoned the vehicle and fled into a wooded area on foot. The trooper managed to catch up to the suspect, but was then assaulted and had his gun taken. The trooper, who remains unidentified, received medical treatment and was discharged from the hospital.

Suspect Apprehended

The suspect, identified as 31-year-old Dustin M. Thompson from Nelson County’s New Hope community, was captured at around 11:30 a.m. Thompson faces several charges, including:

  • Strangulation 1st Degree
  • Assault 1st Degree – Police Officer
  • Disarming a Peace Officer
  • Theft of a firearm

Thompson is currently held without bail at the Marion County Detention Center. It is yet to be determined if he will face additional charges related to the pursuit.
