SPRINGFIELD, Va. – A devastating incident occurred in Springfield on Wednesday evening, resulting in the tragic deaths of two children and one adult who were struck by a train while walking on the tracks.

The victims have been identified as Diego Arriaza, 28, from Annandale, Yeraldin Pardo, 28, from Lincolnia, and Pardo’s 8-year-old child.

According to Fairfax County police, the fatal accident took place in the 7500 block of Accotink Park Road in Springfield at 8:29 p.m. The victims were on the northbound elevated train tracks when they encountered a moving freight train.

It is believed that Arriaza was directly hit by the train, while Pardo and the child fell from the bridge. Tragically, all three individuals were pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigation and Findings

Detectives have ruled out speed and alcohol as factors in the crash concerning the train engineer. However, they are still investigating whether alcohol played a role in the actions of the pedestrians at the time of the accident.
