Accident – Death – Obituary News : A tragic incident occurred in Saint Petersburg, Russia, where four Indian medical students tragically drowned in a river, while one student was fortunately rescued on Thursday. The Consulate General of India in Saint Petersburg took to social media platform ‘X’ to announce that they are collaborating with local authorities in Veliky Novgorod city to repatriate the deceased students’ remains to their families at the earliest convenience.

The Indian Embassy in Russia also stated, “The bereaved families have been contacted and assured of all possible assistance. The surviving student is receiving appropriate medical care.”

The deceased students, all of whom were studying medicine at Veliky Novgorod State University, comprised two boys and two girls aged between 18-20 years. Initially, reports indicated that four students had lost their lives in the tragedy, with the recovery of one body and ongoing efforts to rescue the remaining victims.

Jalgaon District Collector, Ayush Prasad, highlighted the collaborative efforts with the Ministry of External Affairs, the Indian embassy in Russia, and the local authorities to provide support to the affected families. He expressed hope that the bodies would be repatriated to India in accordance with international protocols.

This unfortunate incident evokes memories of a similar tragedy in 2020, when four medical students from Tamil Nadu drowned in the Volga river in Volgograd, Russia. Additionally, the Centre informed Parliament in December 2023 that 403 Indian students have lost their lives abroad since 2018 due to various causes.

As investigations continue into this heartbreaking event, the priority remains on offering solace and support to the families of the deceased students. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those affected by this devastating loss.
