The woman identified as the suspect in the second-degree murders of three roommates found dead Tuesday, slayings that stunned neighbours in Fredericksburg, Virginia, was apprehended days later in New York after evading an attempted traffic stop, driving at speeds of 100 mph, and eventually crashing her vehicle when officers successfully disabled her tyres, authorities have revealed.
Alyssa Jane Venable, aged 23, is facing accusations of using a firearm to carry out the murders of 60-year-old Gregory Scott Powell, 65-year-old Carol Anne Reese, and 77-year-old Robert John McGuire for reasons that remain undisclosed at this time. The defendant’s grandmother mentioned in a local news interview that she believed her granddaughter could pose a threat to herself and is in urgent need of assistance.
The shocking discovery of the three victims, who were found deceased from upper body trauma, occurred on Tuesday night following a welfare check conducted by local authorities. Subsequent investigations pointed towards Venable as the perpetrator of this horrific crime.
The Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office in Virginia, which had previously suggested that Venable may have shaved her head to avoid detection, provided an update on Thursday expressing satisfaction with the arrest of the suspected triple murderer turned fugitive.
Commending both New York troopers and U.S. Marshals for their efforts, the sheriff’s office alleged that Venable drove her 2009 Honda Civic at speeds reaching 100 mph on I-86 in New York when she realised law enforcement was closing in on her.
New York State troopers confirmed that Venable was apprehended on Thursday evening after a high-speed pursuit. “The suspect vehicle failed to comply, so pursuit was initiated. The pursuit entered Troop E, where the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office assisted the New York State Police,” troopers stated. “A tire deflation device was deployed, causing the vehicle to crash.”
Located a couple of hours away from Niagara Falls, Steuben County was where Venable was finally apprehended. Following treatment for non-life-threatening injuries at a hospital, the next step involves initiating the extradition process to transport Venable back to Virginia to face charges.
Records from Steuben County Jail show that Venable was booked after 1 a.m. on Friday. Contrary to earlier speculation, her head was not shaved as suggested by the Spotsylvania County Sheriff’s Office.
According to Spotsylvania General District Court records, Venable has an extensive criminal history dating back to March 2019, which began with an alleged incident of shoplifting or price alteration. In December 2021, she was charged with petit larceny, and in January of this year, she faced a charge of reckless driving. Most recently, on May 17, the defendant was charged with assault and battery.
Reacting to news of the triple murder investigation, neighbour Gary Boxley expressed shock, telling WTVR he was “blown away” by the revelations. “I was like you’ve got to be kidding me” and “like, ‘Dude what is all this about?” Boxley added.
Another neighbour, Bonnie Ennis, shared her disbelief at the tragic events, stating that she saw investigators’ squad cars outside the crime scene with their lights flashing as she left for work around midnight on Tuesday. “It makes you wonder how somebody could do something like that,” Ennis remarked.
