Accident – Death – Obituary News :

GRATIOT COUNTY, Mich. (WJRT) – An Alma resident has been taken into custody and charged in relation to a fatal fire that occurred in Breckenridge back in March.

The Gratiot County Sheriff’s Office revealed that 35-year-old Aaron Painter is facing charges of involuntary manslaughter, delivery manufacture of marijuana, and third-degree child abuse.

Painter was brought before the court on Monday and was able to secure his release by posting 10% of his $2,525 bond.

On the early morning of March 6, an explosion rocked the 700 block of Chestnut Street in Breckenridge. Although neighbours did not hear the blast, they were quick to notice the billowing smoke and flames engulfing the residence.

The victim of the fire was identified as 34-year-old Ali Smith. Tragically, Smith lost her life in the incident, while her seven-year-old daughter sustained severe burns and had to undergo treatment for her injuries. Fortunately, the young girl has since been discharged from the hospital.

Painter, who was in a relationship with Smith at the time, also suffered injuries during the fire and required medical attention.

The Gratiot County Sheriff’s Office has refrained from disclosing the cause and origin of the fire. However, they have enlisted the Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Division to aid in the ongoing probe.

Painter is scheduled to appear in court on June 13 at 9 a.m. for a probable cause hearing, followed by a preliminary examination on June 20 at 10 a.m.
