The 911 calls have been made public following a tragic crash in Augusta, Georgia, where a wrong-way driver allegedly struck a Georgia State Patrol trooper. The incident occurred on Friday night at around 11 p.m.

The other driver involved in the crash, identified as 24-year-old William Hawkins of Augusta, was confirmed as the driver of the Toyota 4Runner that collided with the trooper’s vehicle on Riverwatch Parkway. According to Joshua, a spokesperson for the Georgia State Patrol, Hawkins’s current condition remains unknown as of Tuesday morning.

The trooper involved in the crash has been identified as Trooper First Class Zachary Walker. Despite sustaining serious injuries, Walker is reported to be in stable condition but faces a lengthy road to recovery. Walker was driving east on Riverwatch Parkway near mile marker 3.5 when the head-on collision occurred with the Toyota 4Runner travelling in the wrong direction.

Eyewitness Accounts

Witnesses at the scene described the harrowing experience of seeing a vehicle driving in the wrong direction on the parkway. Cheryl Hall recalled the terrifying moment when headlights appeared in front of her vehicle, coming from the opposite direction.

Mitchell Barton, another eyewitness, recounted seeing a car driving the wrong way on Riverwatch Parkway just moments before the crash. The reckless driving behaviour left many shaken and grateful to have narrowly avoided a potential catastrophe.

Injuries and Hospitalization

Following the crash, both Trooper Walker and William Hawkins were transported to Wellstar MCG hospital for medical treatment. Walker, a former Richmond County deputy turned Georgia State Patrol trooper, had to be extracted from his vehicle due to the severity of his injuries.

Records from the Georgia Peace Officer Standards and Training Council indicate that Trooper Walker recently underwent training in traffic accident management and pursuits. Despite the challenging nature of his work, Walker is in good standing with no prior sanctions or investigations. A recent announcement by the Georgia Department of Public Safety mentioned Walker’s upcoming promotion to the rank of corporal.
