(CBS DETROIT) – A man from Michigan, Christopher Charles Savage, aged 24 and residing in Wixom, has been charged with felony murder and first-degree child abuse in connection with the death of his girlfriend’s 1-year-old child.
The tragic incident unfolded on June 1 at 12:26 a.m. when Wixom officers responded to a distress call at a residence in the 30000 block of Tamarack Drive. The report indicated an unresponsive 1-year-old child, later identified as McKinley Hardy, in the home. Upon arrival, officers found the child’s mother and her boyfriend, Savage, administering CPR to the young girl.
Medical personnel took over the CPR efforts, and McKinley was rushed to a hospital in Novi. She was subsequently transferred to Children’s Hospital in Detroit, where she tragically succumbed to her injuries.
An initial investigation revealed that McKinley had sustained multiple injuries across her body, ultimately leading to her untimely demise. Savage was reportedly the sole adult present with the child when these injuries occurred.
Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald expressed profound dismay over the incident, stating, “Words cannot begin to describe how deeply disturbing and upsetting this incident is. Children deserve safe environments to grow and thrive, and this child clearly did not have that opportunity. My office will fight for justice for the victim and their loved ones.”
Savage was formally arraigned on Tuesday and is scheduled to appear in court for a probable cause conference on June 12. His preliminary examination has been set for June 18.
