A shocking incident in Wichita, UK, left a teenager from Haysville paralyzed after a confrontation involving gel blasters escalated into a violent shooting. The details of the incident were revealed in a probable cause affidavit released on Wednesday.
According to the court document, on May 11, 2024, two teenagers were at the Goddard Walmart when three other teens arrived in a blue Chevrolet Spark and began shooting at them with gel blasters, toy guns that fire polymer water beads.
A Walmart employee witnessed the incident and reported that the car’s driver, later identified as Anakin Zehring, was shooting the gel blaster while shouting, “I’m your senior assassin.” The employee immediately alerted the store’s management about the disturbance caused by the teenagers.
After entering Walmart, the teens were confronted by the manager and subsequently chased out of the store. They later returned to their car, where the two teens who had been shot pointed them out to an older man, identified as Ruben Contreras.

The two teens who were shot revealed to deputies that “senior assassin” is a game played at Goddard High School, where students shoot at each other with water guns. The teenage girl recounted how the driver of the blue car shot her and her boyfriend with a gel blaster before driving off and parking in the lot.
Upon her father’s arrival at Walmart, the girl pointed out the boys who had shot her. She then heard a loud noise and witnessed the car driving away, crashing into shipping containers.
Subsequent review of Walmart surveillance footage captured the blue Spark reversing out of a parking space. The footage showed Contreras attempting to open the car’s door before running back to the driver’s side and seemingly retrieving a firearm from his waistband.
As the Spark slowed down in the parking lot, Contreras approached the driver’s side again and pulled out the firearm, firing a single round into the vehicle, as detailed in the affidavit.
Anakin Zehring confirmed to deputies that he was driving around the parking lot while someone in his car was shooting the gel blaster at people. Following the incident, Zehring realised he had been shot and lost sensation in his legs, ultimately crashing the car to prevent further harm.
Upon the arrival of deputies, Zehring was found in the driver’s seat of the Spark with a gunshot wound to his lower back. He was rushed to Ascension Via Christi St. Francis, where doctors indicated that the bullet had struck his kidney and liver, potentially resulting in paralysis.
Ruben Contreras was charged with attempted first-degree murder in connection to the shooting on May 15. He is currently out on a £300,000 bond.
In a recent interview with 12 News reporter Cale Chapman, Zehring’s father shared updates on his son’s recovery, revealing that the teenager spent three weeks in the hospital before being transferred to the Madonna Rehab Facility in Omaha.
