MEMPHIS, Tenn. (WMC) – The community of Frayser is mourning the loss of a beloved grandmother, 91-year-old Robbie Powell, who tragically lost her life in a hit-and-run incident while out on her routine morning walk. The incident, which occurred on Friday, also left another woman critically injured.
Powell’s walking partner, Latrice Alexander, shared that Powell had been walking in the neighbourhood for decades as a way to stay healthy. Alexander described Powell as a historian of the area, always eager to share her knowledge and stories with those around her.
The driver responsible for the hit-and-run, which involved a maroon SUV, was last seen in the area just before 6:30 a.m. According to Memphis police, the SUV lost control while turning onto Burnham Avenue from Overton Crossing Street, striking Powell and the other pedestrian.
Both women were rushed to Regional One Hospital in critical condition, where Powell sadly succumbed to her injuries. The community is reeling from the loss of such a cherished member.
Alexander expressed the pain of not being able to finish Powell’s walk and the desire to honour her memory by completing it as a community. The surviving pedestrian continues to recover at the hospital.
The tragic incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and the devastating impact of reckless driving. The driver responsible for the hit-and-run is still at large, leaving the community eager for justice to be served.
