A man has been sentenced to life in prison for the first-degree murder of a Fareway supermarket employee in Monticello, Iowa. Nathan Allen Russell, 38, of East Dubuque, Illinois, pleaded guilty to the death of 48-year-old Aaron McAtee, who was fatally shot outside the supermarket on November 7, 2023.

The tragic incident took place at the Fareway Meat and Grocery located at 420 North Farley St. Monticello Police Department officers responded to a report of a man being shot and found McAtee with fatal injuries. Witnesses reported seeing McAtee being shot by a rifle from a black sedan with Illinois license plates.

Further investigation revealed that Russell had visited the supermarket shortly after the shooting, leading to him being identified as a person of interest. A deputy from Delaware County located Russell in Hopkinton, 10 miles away from Monticello. When Russell failed to comply with instructions, the deputy shot him. Russell survived his injuries and the officer was later cleared of any wrongdoing.

Russell, now sentenced to life without the possibility of parole, has also been ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to McAtee’s family. This case serves as a tragic reminder of the consequences of senseless violence and the impact it has on families and communities.
