5th June 2024 – (Hong Kong) A disturbing hit-and-run incident in Sheung Shui district has shocked the community after an 8-year-old girl was left injured by a reckless taxi driver. The driver, identified as a 56-year-old local businessman named Mr. Choi, has been apprehended and is now facing a slew of serious charges.

The incident took place around 11am on 1st June at the intersection of Po Shek Wu Road and Po Wan Road. According to witnesses, the taxi allegedly ran a red light, striking the young girl as she crossed the street on a green pedestrian signal. The driver callously fled the scene, leaving the victim with bruises, scrapes on her arms, legs, and forehead, and even causing her to lose a tooth due to the impact. The girl was rushed to North District Hospital, where she received treatment for her injuries and was discharged later that day.

Authorities swiftly launched an investigation into the hit-and-run, with CCTV footage providing crucial evidence. It was discovered that the taxi involved had been operating with a fake number plate and was not registered with the Transport Department for an extended period. The vehicle was eventually located in a car park near a shop in Fanling the following night.

Arrest and Charges

Mr. Choi surrendered himself to the police early on Monday morning and was promptly taken into custody. He now faces a litany of charges, including dangerous driving, failure to stop after an accident, failure to report an accident, use of false documents, driving an unregistered vehicle, and driving without third-party insurance.

Further examination of CCTV footage and cross-referencing with registered taxis revealed that the taxi had been using counterfeit plates. The damage on the right-side mirror and rain shield of the vehicle corroborated the collision with the young girl.

Police Condemnation and Legal Ramifications

The Hong Kong Police have strongly condemned Mr. Choi’s reckless actions, emphasizing the blatant disregard for human life and safety. A police spokesperson expressed outrage, stating, “Such reckless and irresponsible behaviour not only endangers lives but also violates the trust and safety regulations expected of all drivers.”

The charges of dangerous driving could lead to severe consequences for Mr. Choi, including up to seven years in prison and a hefty fine of HK$50,000 if additional charges of causing serious bodily harm are substantiated.

This harrowing incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of road safety and the severe consequences of reckless driving. The community is united in support of the young victim and in advocating for justice to be served in this disturbing case.
