Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Defense Prisoner of War/Missing in Action (POW/MIA) Accounting Agency has announced a significant breakthrough in the case of a 21-year-old Roanoke man who was killed in action during World War II in France.

Sgt. Mayburn L. Hudson’s Story

Sgt. Mayburn L. Hudson, aged 21, was a member of Company F, 2nd Battalion, 330th Infantry Regiment, 83rd Infantry Division, serving in the European Theater. On August 7, 1944, his unit faced heavy German fire in Brittany, France.

Ordered to assault a heavily-fortified German position at the top of a hill known as “The Citadel,” Hudson tragically lost his life during the assault. Due to the intense fighting, his remains could not be recovered, leading to his classification as “Missing in Action.” A Report of Death was issued in January 1945 when his remains could not be located.

The Search for Hudson

In November 1944, the American Graves Registration Command received information from a French citizen about several Americans buried near the location where Hudson was believed to have fallen. Despite an extensive search, the remains found could not be positively identified as belonging to Hudson. These unidentified remains were interred at the U.S. Military Cemetery at St. James, now known as the Brittany American Cemetery.

It was not until June 2019 that a breakthrough occurred. Remains were exhumed from the cemetery and, through a combination of anthropological and dental analysis, mitochondrial DNA analysis, and circumstantial evidence, they were positively identified as belonging to Sgt. Mayburn L. Hudson.

Bringing Hudson Home

After decades of uncertainty, Sgt. Mayburn L. Hudson’s remains will finally be returned to Virginia. He will be laid to rest in Lynchburg on August 7, commemorating the 80th anniversary of the day he made the ultimate sacrifice for his country.
