San Bernardino County (KCAL/KCBS) — The shocking discovery of nearly 70 dogs trapped in cages at a residence in an unincorporated part of San Bernardino County has sparked outrage and concern for animal welfare advocates. The incident unfolded over the weekend when deputies were called to the 39200 block of North Shore Drive following a report of suspected animal cruelty.
Upon arrival, law enforcement officials were met with a distressing scene as they found a Uhaul truck filled with dogs in cages and numerous other dogs in poor condition scattered throughout the property. The animals were reportedly left in sweltering heat without adequate food and water.
The woman responsible for the care of the dogs, identified as 44-year-old Marinda Montanez, claimed to be their caretaker. She was cited and released at the scene by deputies. All the dogs were subsequently surrendered to local Animal Control for further care and evaluation.
However, the distress did not end there as deputies were called back to the property later that evening due to reports of neglect involving Montanez’s 8-year-old daughter. The child had suffered injuries that required medical attention, prompting investigators to take action.
Further investigations revealed troubling details about Montanez’s actions, including leaving her children unattended on a previous occasion to engage in drug use. As a result, the three children were removed from her care and placed under the supervision of Children & Family Services.
Montanez was subsequently arrested on charges of child abuse/neglect and is currently being held on a bail amount of $100,000. In addition to the animal cruelty allegations, authorities are also looking into the misrepresentation of a nonprofit organization by Montanez, who claimed to be associated with Pause 4 Paws Big Bear.
This harrowing incident serves as a stark reminder of the importance of upholding animal welfare laws and providing proper care for vulnerable individuals, both human and animal alike. Authorities are continuing their investigations into the matter to ensure justice is served for the innocent victims involved.
