ROYAL OAK, Mich. (WXYZ) — A 34-year-old solicitor has been apprehended by authorities after allegedly trying to unlawfully enter the residence of a former colleague on Smith Avenue in Royal Oak. The individual was found in possession of alarming items, including a loaded firearm, a large knife, rope, a hammer, duct tape, and latex gloves.

The suspect has been identified as Levi Trahern Smith from Dearborn Heights, a solicitor at the law firm of Anthony, Paulovich & Worrall.

Royal Oak Police Investigation

According to Royal Oak police, the incident occurred on June 1 around 1:20 a.m. when the woman residing in the house was alerted by her home surveillance system of a man attempting to enter through the side door. The woman promptly called the police and activated an outdoor panic alarm, leading to the immediate intervention of two Royal Oak patrol officers.

Upon arrival, the suspect, identified as Smith, was found with latex gloves on his person and an additional pair in his backpack along with the other concerning items. The investigation revealed that Smith was a former co-worker of the victim with a history of displaying romantic interest in her.

Community Response

7 News Detroit spoke to neighbours on Smith Avenue, who expressed shock at the attempted break-in. The woman involved was too distressed to provide a statement on camera.

Neighbour Dan Granger described the incident as having “pretty bad intentions” and expressed concern for the mental state of the suspect, stating, “This guy needs help.”

Legal Actions

Smith has been charged with first-degree attempted home invasion and felony firearm possession, carrying a maximum sentence of seven years. Oakland County Prosecutor Karen McDonald commended the victim for her quick actions in contacting law enforcement.

The law firm of Anthony, Paulovich & Worrall issued a statement confirming Smith’s termination and expressing support for the victim in this situation.

Neighbour Chris Lyon commented on the incident, stating, “An attorney is supposed to be a respected member of the community, not creepy.” Despite the belief that this was an isolated event, the community plans to increase vigilance and security measures.

Smith appeared in court on Tuesday and was granted a $25,000 bond. A probable cause conference is scheduled for June 14 to further address the charges.
