A 34-year-old man from Jaffna was apprehended at the Katunayake Airport today for attempting to fly to Canada using a passport belonging to someone else with a valid visa. The suspect’s identity has not been disclosed at this time.

The arrest was made after immigration officers noticed a discrepancy between the passport photo and the individual presenting it at the Immigration counter. Further checks revealed that the passport belonged to a person who had a travel ban imposed by the Trincomalee Magistrate’s Court.

Upon closer inspection, the suspect was handed over to the Border Inspection Unit of the Immigration Department. During the investigation, it was discovered that the man possessed his National Identity Card (NIC).

The suspect confessed during interrogation that he had acquired the fake passport through a broker in Anuradhapura. The broker had promised to facilitate his travel to Canada in exchange for a payment of Rs. 13 million upon arrival in the country.

This incident highlights the dangers and consequences of attempting to travel using fraudulent documents. The authorities are conducting further investigations into the matter to determine the extent of the network involved in such illegal activities.
