Accident – Death – Obituary News : WAUSAU, WI (OnFocus) – An investigation is underway by the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office into a vehicle pursuit that commenced in the Town of Mosinee and culminated on U.S. Highway 51 in the City of Wausau in the early hours of June 5, 2024.
The driver involved has been identified as 21-year-old Justin Allen Phillips from Mosinee. Following the pursuit, Phillips, who was the sole occupant of the vehicle, was taken into custody. He sustained minor injuries and was subsequently transported to a local hospital for treatment. After being released from the hospital, Phillips was transferred to the Marathon County Jail. Fortunately, only one Marathon County Deputy sustained minor injuries during the incident and has since returned to duty after undergoing a medical assessment.
The events unfolded at approximately 3:49 a.m. when Deputies from the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office initiated a traffic stop near the junction of County Highway KK and Burma Road in the Town of Mosinee. The vehicle in question had been reported stolen by the Plover Police Department.
Despite the Deputies activating their emergency lights and siren, the driver failed to comply, prompting a pursuit that traversed the City of Mosinee and onto U.S. Highway 51 in a northbound direction. Tire deflation devices deployed by the Mountain Bay and Wausau Police Departments successfully slowed down the vehicle, allowing a Deputy from the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office to employ a Pursuit Intervention Technique (P.I.T.), bringing the pursuit to an end. The vehicle became disabled on U.S. Highway 51, north of Stewart Avenue. Subsequently, U.S. Highway 51 was temporarily closed to facilitate the safe apprehension of the driver.
The Marathon County Sheriff’s Office received assistance from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, the Mountain Bay Police Department, the Wausau Police Department, and the Mosinee Police Department in managing the situation.
As the investigation is ongoing, further details are not currently available. The report will be forwarded to the Marathon County District Attorney’s Office for the consideration of charges. The cooperation of the public and local authorities is acknowledged and appreciated. Any updates will be shared on the Marathon County Sheriff’s Office Facebook page as they become available.
