Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A Nevada Department of Corrections officer, Lieutenant Jonathan Rivera, is currently recovering in a Las Vegas hospital after being struck by an alleged wrong-way, DUI driver on the U.S. 95 near Kyle Canyon.

Lieutenant Rivera was en route to High Desert Prison when the incident occurred. The head-on collision left him with serious injuries, requiring him to be airlifted to the hospital for treatment.

Speaking exclusively to 8 News Now, Rivera’s sister-in-law, Maria Alcaraz, described him as a beloved family member who has sustained multiple injuries in the crash. Despite being coherent, Rivera’s recovery timeline remains uncertain.

Meanwhile, the driver responsible for the collision has been identified as 31-year-old Donovan Garcia Moreno. He is currently in custody, facing charges of DUI and reckless driving.

Upon arrival at the scene, police found Moreno seated in the center median, his face covered in blood and emitting a strong alcohol odor. An arrest report indicated that Moreno displayed signs of intoxication, including red and watery eyes.

Initially, Moreno claimed to have taken a Lyft after socializing with friends and consuming alcohol. However, his account later changed, stating that he was a pedestrian on the freeway and had been struck while attempting to evade traffic.

Contradictory evidence, including seat belt bruising consistent with a driver’s position, led investigators to believe Moreno was behind the wheel at the time of the collision. Additionally, Moreno’s criminal record revealed two prior DUI arrests, making this his third offense.

Reflecting on the incident, Alcaraz emphasized the dangers of drink-driving and expressed gratitude for Rivera’s survival. She urged for greater awareness and responsibility on the roads to prevent similar tragedies.

To support Lieutenant Rivera’s recovery, the family has established a GoFundMe page to assist with medical expenses. Donations are welcomed to aid in his rehabilitation journey.

Despite sustaining minor injuries in the crash, Moreno showed no remorse upon learning of the harm caused. He is currently detained at the Clark County Detention Center without bail.
