D.C. Witness’s data for May reveals a notable decrease in non-fatal shooting incidents in Washington, D.C. In May, there were 21 non-fatal shooting victims, marking a 50 percent decrease from the previous month, which reported 42 non-fatal shooting victims in the District according to the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD).

Furthermore, the data shows that homicides also saw a decline in May, with 15 homicide victims recorded, compared to 17 in April, representing an 11 percent decrease.

One of the incidents involved MPD officers responding to an individual experiencing a mental health crisis, resulting in the individual allegedly stabbing a responding officer on May 18.

In another event, MPD officers sought assistance from the Behavioral Health’s Community Response Team for an individual in crisis on the 2400 block of Virginia Avenue, NW. The individual, identified as Jonathan Jefferson, 28, posed an immediate danger, leading to an altercation where he allegedly stabbed an officer before being subdued by another officer.

Despite initial attempts to restrain Jefferson using a Taser, the situation escalated, and an officer was forced to shoot Jefferson. Jefferson was subsequently arrested and charged with four counts of assault on a police officer.

Another noteworthy incident occurred at Dunbar High School on May 4, where a juvenile girl sustained a graze wound to the head from a stray bullet that entered her classroom through a window. Two individuals, Azhari Graves, 18, and Saki Frost, 17, were arrested in connection with the incident and are facing multiple charges.

The MPD continues its investigation into the tragic fatal shooting of three-year-old Ty’ah Settles on May 3. Despite efforts to save her, she succumbed to her injuries. A reward is being offered for information leading to the arrest or conviction of any suspects involved in the case.
