On the 5th of June 2024, authorities in Indiana announced a significant breakthrough in the ongoing investigation into a suspected serial killer. The Hamilton County Coroner’s Office revealed that human remains recovered from Fox Hollow Farm, once owned by Herb Baumeister, have been positively identified as belonging to Jeffrey Jones, who went missing in August 1993.

Jeffrey Jones is now the third victim to be identified from the extensive collection of over 10,000 charred human remains found at Fox Hollow Farm. Among the remains, there are four additional DNA profiles yet to be matched, bringing the total number of presumed victims to 12.

Challenging Investigation

The investigation has posed significant challenges due to the severe damage inflicted on the remains, including burning and crushing. Despite these obstacles, the dedicated team of law enforcement officials and forensic specialists involved in the case remain steadfast in their commitment to uncovering the truth. Hamilton County Coroner Jeff Jellison expressed his appreciation for the collaborative efforts of the FBI, Indiana State Police Laboratory, Dr. Krista Latham from the University of Indianapolis, and DNA experts from Othram Laboratory in Texas.

The successful identification of Jeffrey Jones’ remains was made possible through an extensive forensic genetic genealogy investigation conducted by the FBI and the coroner’s office. The remaining four DNA profiles will also undergo genetic genealogy analysis by the FBI to aid in their identification.

Suspected Modus Operandi

Investigators believe that Herb Baumeister, a businessman and father of three, targeted gay men during the mid-1980s to mid-1990s, luring them to his home where he allegedly killed them and disposed of their bodies at Fox Hollow Farm in Westfield, just north of Indianapolis.

The investigation into Baumeister began in 1996 when his son discovered human bones on their property. Before authorities could question him, Baumeister tragically took his own life in July 1996.

As the investigation continues, the collaborative efforts of law enforcement agencies and forensic experts aim to bring closure to the families of the victims and shed light on this dark chapter in Indiana’s history.
