The police in Lagos State have apprehended a woman identified as Funmi Faith for reportedly mistreating a young girl.

According to a statement released by the command’s Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, the 32-year-old suspect was taken into custody on Tuesday.

The arrest of the mother came after a viral video surfaced online, showing a witness confronting her about the alleged abuse. In the footage, the woman can be seen verbally sparring with the concerned citizen, who eventually vowed to report the incident to the authorities.

The witness, who captured the encounter on video, can be heard saying, “Mummy Mariam, this behaviour is unacceptable. You cannot treat this girl in such a dehumanising manner. I will be forwarding this video to the Lagos State government. This is utterly deplorable.”

Providing an update on the situation, the state’s police spokesperson stated, “The woman seen in the viral video mistreating a young girl, 32-year-old Funmi Faith, has been taken into custody.”

Mr Hundeyin confirmed that the suspect was apprehended by officers from the Oke-odo Division on Tuesday, June 4, 2024.

“Meanwhile, the child has been placed in the care of the Lagos State Ministry of Youth and Social Development for proper protection and support,” he added.

The incident has sparked outrage among members of the community, with many calling for justice to be served and for measures to be put in place to prevent such cases of abuse in the future.

Authorities are currently investigating the matter further to ensure that the welfare of the child is prioritised and that the perpetrator faces the full consequences of her actions.
