Suspected Arson Kills Woman in Wheelchair

A woman has been taken into custody by the police on allegations of setting fire to a Detroit home, resulting in the death of her ex-boyfriend’s mother, who was in a wheelchair and unable to escape. Fortunately, the ex-boyfriend and another woman managed to escape safely.

Firefighters were called to the burning home on Seminole late Monday night and discovered the victim’s body inside. Tragically, she was confined to a wheelchair and could not flee the flames, while her son and another woman managed to escape through a window.

The suspect was apprehended at a Livonia motel shortly after the incident. It is claimed that she sent a series of threatening text messages to her ex-partner prior to setting the fire. The suspect is accused of purchasing an accelerant from a nearby gas station and igniting the blaze.

Neighbour Brandi Brewer described the scene, stating, “By the time I came outside, it was blazing. It already made it to the top. That was really heartbreaking for the family to have to witness that.”

ShotStopper Contracts Renewed

As the murder and shooting rates decline in Detroit, contracts for ShotStopper have been extended. Detroit Friends and Family, Detroit Peoples Community, Force Detroit, and New Era CC have all been granted year-long contract renewals, while Detroit 300 and Wayne Metro have received three-month extensions. This decision follows a successful year of the program, which provides funding to community organizations working to reduce violence in the city.

An official from the city informed council members that the first four groups had shown “significant improvement,” hence the year-long renewals. The other two groups have also made progress but require additional time to refine their strategies and achieve the same level of impact as their counterparts.

Armed Lawyer Caught Trying to Break Into Home

Over the weekend, a Dearborn lawyer was reportedly armed with a gun, knife, handcuffs, masks, a hammer, a crowbar, duct tape, and latex gloves when he attempted to break into a former colleague’s Royal Oak residence. The victim awoke to Levi Trahern Smith, 34, trying to enter her side door while she was asleep inside her home on Smith Avenue near Crooks Road at around 1:20 a.m. on Saturday. She activated a panic button, and Smith attempted to leave but was apprehended by Royal Oak police officers.

Investigators discovered that Smith had previously worked with the victim and had shown romantic interest in her. Additional firearms were discovered at Smith’s residence.

During a court hearing, Detective Zach Meckl stated, “There were a large number of firearms as well as ammunition found throughout the home – as well as the vehicle. There are still two registered handguns that are outstanding that we are unable to locate.” Smith has been charged with first-degree attempted home invasion and felony firearm. His bail has been set at $25,000 cash or surety, with no provision for a 10% payment.

Man Charged with Murdering 1-Year-Old

A Wixom man is facing charges after authorities allege he fatally abused his girlfriend’s daughter over the weekend. Police responded to a residence in the 30000 block of Tamarack Drive early Saturday following reports of an unresponsive child.

Upon arrival, Christopher Savage and the child’s mother were administering CPR to McKinely Hardy. The girl was transported to Ascension Providence Hospital in Novi before being transferred to Children’s Hospital in Detroit, where she succumbed to her injuries.

Wixom Police Detective Sergeant Dean Caldwell stated, “The child has substantial injuries. Multiple injuries that spread all over her body. We do know the one that most likely was the cause of death at this point, according to the Wayne County Medical Examiner’s office, would’ve been an injury to her head.” Savage was arraigned on Tuesday on charges of felony murder and first-degree child abuse and is currently in custody at the Oakland County Jail.

Hit-and-Run Suspect Receives Prison Sentence

Gavin Kassab, who fled the scene after a hit-and-run incident in Walled Lake that resulted in the death of a 13-year-old, was sentenced to 8-15 years in prison on Tuesday. The crash occurred in March 2023 when Kassab, who was 18 at the time, was with a 15-year-old driver fleeing from police.

The driver ran a red light in Walled Lake, causing a four-car collision that claimed the life of 13-year-old Piper Carrothers, injured her mother, Erica Carrothers, and left her 10-year-old sister, Cora Carrothers, with serious injuries. Both Kassab and the underage driver fled from the scene after the crash.

Erica Carrothers, the victim’s mother, recalled the harrowing experience, stating, “While Gavin was running, they were loading the limp body of my daughter Piper into an ambulance. My husband was rushing to the hospital to meet her as I held out hope.”
