Army : “Gunman Attacks US Embassy in Lebanon”

The Lebanese army reported that a gunman was apprehended after firing shots at the United States embassy situated north of the capital Beirut. The incident occurred in the highly secured area of Awkar, where the embassy is located.

Details of the Attack

According to the army statement, Lebanese soldiers stationed near the embassy swiftly responded to the gunfire, injuring the assailant who was identified as a Syrian national. The wounded gunman was subsequently taken into custody and transported to a nearby hospital for medical treatment.

Security Member Injured

A security member of the embassy was also reported to have sustained injuries during the attack. The individual was part of the embassy’s security team and was hurt in the exchange of gunfire with the assailant. The Lebanese soldiers managed to wound the attacker in the stomach, effectively neutralizing the threat.

US Embassy Response

The US embassy confirmed that the incident took place at approximately 8.34 am local time near its entrance. Despite the small arms fire directed at the embassy, the facility and its personnel remained unharmed and secure.

The US embassy in Awkar was relocated from Beirut following a devastating suicide attack in 1983 that resulted in the loss of over 60 lives. This move was made to enhance security measures and protect embassy staff and visitors from potential threats.
