Authorities from the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP) reported a dramatic high-speed pursuit that spanned three counties and ended with the arrest of a driver on Monday morning.

The incident unfolded shortly after 10 a.m. when a trooper tried to pull over a 2015 Chrysler 200 travelling westbound on Interstate 4 near DeLand in Volusia County. According to an official report, the driver, identified as 26-year-old Wilfred Ruiz from Orlando, was speeding at a staggering 115 mph. Ignoring the trooper’s signal to stop, Ruiz fled the scene, driving recklessly and initiating a pursuit by the FHP.

The chase, which reached speeds of up to 120 mph, carried on into Seminole County where Ruiz’s vehicle collided with a white box truck. Despite the impact, Ruiz continued to evade authorities. The pursuit eventually entered Orange County, where troopers executed a PIT maneuver to halt the vehicle. The maneuver caused Ruiz’s sedan to crash into a concrete wall, but he attempted to flee by ramming into the patrol cars.

Wilfred Ruiz, 26, is facing a slew of charges, including fleeing and eluding, reckless fleeing endangering others or property, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, and fraud.

The troopers managed to corner the vehicle against the median, bringing it to a halt. Upon approaching the sedan, a trooper noticed signs of a possible overdose in Ruiz and administered Narcan, reviving him.

Ruiz, who was already on probation for aggravated assault and did not possess a valid driver’s license, was taken into custody and transported to Advent Health Orlando for medical evaluation before being booked into Orange County Jail.

In the arrest reports, troopers detailed a search of Ruiz’s vehicle which uncovered a black purse containing identification and credit cards belonging to other individuals, along with a small quantity of cocaine, multiple plastic baggies, and a digital scale.

The pursuit resulted in substantial damage to two FHP vehicles, both of which had to be towed for repairs.

Ruiz now faces a multitude of charges, including fleeing and eluding, reckless fleeing endangering others or property, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, and fraud.
