Accident – Death – Obituary News :

A Denver man has been charged with attempted murder and a slew of other felony charges after a harrowing incident that unfolded in May, starting near Interstate 25 in Johnstown before culminating in Berthoud. The suspect allegedly attempted to run over a deputy before crashing, resulting in injuries to several individuals and the tragic death of a beloved pet.

The sequence of events began just after midnight on May 18, when a Larimer County Sheriff’s Office deputy observed a vehicle driving along Interstate 25 and exiting at State Highway without license plates. The deputy attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but the driver of the grey sedan evaded law enforcement, reaching speeds exceeding 100 mph while heading west on State Highway.

As law enforcement deputies pursued the sedan, another deputy prepared to deploy tire spikes at First Street and Mountain Avenue in downtown Berthoud. The driver of the sedan allegedly swerved towards the deputy, forcing them to seek cover to avoid a potential collision. Subsequently, the driver veered again, causing the vehicle to roll and eventually come to a stop, after colliding with an LCSO K9 vehicle.

Upon approaching the scene, deputies safely extricated the occupants of the vehicle, including two adult passengers and the driver identified as 38-year-old Van Radley. All three individuals sustained injuries in the crash and were transported to a local hospital. Tragically, a dog found in the vehicle did not survive the impact.

Sheriff John Feyen expressed dismay over the incident, stating, “This shocking act of reckless violence threatened the lives of community members and first responders and, sadly, claimed the life of an innocent animal. We cannot allow dangerous offenders to cause harm without facing consequences.”

Further investigation revealed that Radley, who initially provided false identification, had an outstanding misdemeanor traffic warrant and a felony parole hold warrant in Weld County. Upon his release from the hospital, Radley was taken into custody and booked into the Larimer County Jail on existing warrants, in addition to new charges stemming from the incident.

The charges against Radley include attempted first-degree murder after deliberation, attempted first-degree murder by extreme indifference, second-degree kidnapping, vehicular eluding causing injury, aggravated cruelty to animals, reckless vehicular assault, false reporting of identifying information to law enforcement, aggravated driving with a revoked license, and reckless driving.

Due to the incident originating in Weld County, Radley was transferred to the Weld County Jail and will face prosecution in the 19th Judicial District. He has been assigned a $75,000 cash or surety bond and is scheduled to appear in Weld County Court at 8:30 a.m. on Wednesday.
