A devastating single-vehicle crash in Waikoloa has left a 27-year-old man dead and two young toddlers injured, Hawaii Island police have reported.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday morning, around 1:35 a.m., near mile marker 5 on Waikoloa Road.
According to investigators, the driver, identified as Samiu Kealoha Kama Olevao, was travelling east on Waikoloa Road when he failed to negotiate a right turn, crossing the double solid yellow lines.
Subsequently, the vehicle veered off the makai shoulder of the road and tumbled down a rock embankment, resulting in the driver being ejected from the sedan as it rolled.
Tragically, Olevao was pronounced dead upon arrival at Kona Community Hospital. Meanwhile, two young girls, aged 3 and 4, who were also in the vehicle, were taken to North Hawaii Community Hospital for treatment and later discharged.
Authorities believe that speed and impairment may have been contributing factors in the crash, with Olevao reportedly not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the incident.
