A 25-year-old man from Indiana has been taken into custody following the tragic death of his wife, just five weeks after the birth of their child. The suspect, identified as Robert Cooley, is accused of brutally attacking and fatally shooting his wife, a kindergarten teacher, inside their home before alerting authorities to the incident.
Robert Cooley was arrested on Saturday and has been charged with one count of murder in connection with the killing of his 26-year-old wife, Amber Cooley, as confirmed by law enforcement officials.
According to a press release issued by the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department, officers from the Northwest District responded to a call reporting a shooting at a residence on Armory Lane around 7:20 a.m. on June 1.
Upon arrival at the scene, emergency responders discovered Amber Cooley in an upstairs bedroom, where she was pronounced dead from injuries consistent with gunshot wounds. Robert Cooley was present at the time of the incident and was promptly apprehended by law enforcement officers without resistance. He was subsequently taken in for questioning and charged with murder after consultation with the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office.
Details from a probable cause affidavit obtained by the Indianapolis Star shed light on the events leading up to the tragic incident. Officers arriving at the Cooley residence observed the suspect covered in blood as he exited the garage to meet them. In a cryptic admission, Robert Cooley allegedly confessed to the officers, stating, “I did something bad. I need to go to jail.”
Body camera footage captured Robert Cooley admitting to taking his wife’s life as he was escorted away from the scene. In a subsequent interview with detectives, he reportedly confessed to physically assaulting and shooting his wife, causing fatal injuries. According to reports from Indianapolis CW affiliate WISH, Amber Cooley’s injuries included a slit throat and severe facial trauma.
Robert Cooley’s brother revealed to authorities that the suspect had contacted him via FaceTime on the morning of the incident, confessing to Amber’s murder. The couple had recently welcomed their first child, born approximately five weeks prior to the tragic event.
Amber Cooley’s parents disclosed to WISH that their daughter had endured verbal abuse from Robert throughout their five-year relationship. They also revealed that she had expressed intentions of seeking a dissolution of marriage, prompting speculation that a confrontation over this issue may have escalated into violence.
Robert Cooley is currently held without bond at the Marion County Jail as the investigation into the incident continues.
