The bodies of two canoeists who had been missing for two weeks after their canoes were swept over a waterfall in Minnesota have been located.

A group of four individuals in two canoes went over Curtain Falls waterfall in the Boundary Waters wilderness last month, plummeting 30ft into the waters of Iron Lake below. The waterfall is situated on the border between the US and Canada.

Following the incident, two individuals were rescued downstream from a small island and were airlifted by a helicopter from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

Search teams discovered the body of Reis Melvin Grams, aged 40, on Monday, while the body of Jesse Haugen, aged 41, from Cambridge, Minnesota, was found on Friday.

The two rescued individuals were identified as Kyle Thomas Sellers, aged 47, and Erik Michael Grams, aged 43, who is the brother of Reis Melvin Grams.

Mr Sellers sustained injuries from the fall and was airlifted to the hospital with severe but non-life-threatening injuries. A fifth member of the group, Jared Jay Lohse, aged 33, was on the shore during the incident.

Initial search efforts were hindered by adverse weather conditions, as Nate Skelton, division commander with the St Louis County sheriff’s office, informed the Star Tribune.

The missing individuals were part of a group familiar with the area.

The men were fishing above the falls when “something happened; one of them got in distress, the other one tried to provide assistance, and they both ended up going over the falls,” Mr Skelton told the publication.
