Accident – Death – Obituary News :

The Washington County Quorum Court recently convened to discuss the future of the Northwest Arkansas Community Correction Center, a vital facility that provides resources for incarcerated women in the region. During the meeting, the quorum court unanimously passed a resolution to express their support for the center, highlighting the importance of its services in the community.

Non-binding Resolution Passed

It is important to note that the resolution passed by the quorum court is non-binding, meaning that it does not establish any new laws or regulations. Instead, it serves as a formal declaration of the court’s opinion on the matter. The decision to support the center comes at a critical time as the lease for the correction center is set to expire on Dec. 31, raising concerns about potential overcrowding issues.

County Judge Advocates for State Support

A county spokesperson emphasised that the Northwest Arkansas Community Correction Center currently caters to only a small portion of the population in Benton and Washington counties. County judge, Patrick Deakins, has voiced his support for the center but is urging the state to contribute its fair share to ensure the facility can continue operating effectively.

Assistance for Incarcerated Women

The correction center is renowned for its support of incarcerated women who are grappling with addiction and mental health challenges. In light of the vital services provided by the center, the county is expected to vote on a resolution to further endorse its operations in the community.

Justice of the Peace member Beth Coger, who drafted the resolution, stressed the importance of conveying the community’s support for the Northwest Arkansas Community Correction Center to key stakeholders such as the department, governor, and legislators. Coger also plans to propose an ordinance for a feasibility study to evaluate the potential consequences of the center’s closure.

“If we don’t have information, knowledge, and data to make decisions about that, we’re not doing our job,” Coger affirmed, underscoring the need for comprehensive research and analysis to inform the court’s future actions.
