Authorities in Akron, Ohio are currently investigating a tragic shooting that occurred at a street party over the weekend. The incident, which took place in the early hours of Sunday morning, resulted in the death of one individual and left 24 others injured. Police suspect that the shooter opened fire on the crowd from a vehicle.
Chief Brian Harding revealed that the scene of the shooting was scattered with over 35 shell casings, indicating the severity of the incident. The gathering, which was in celebration of a birthday, had more than 100 attendees at the time of the shooting. Amidst the chaos, investigators also discovered two handguns at the scene, suggesting that some partygoers may have attempted to defend themselves by returning fire.
Despite their efforts, no suspects have been identified as of yet. In a plea for help, Mayor Shammas Malik and Chief Harding have urged witnesses to come forward. To incentivize information sharing, rewards totaling $22,500 have been offered by the Summit County Crime Stoppers, U.S. Marshal’s Service, and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives.
Mayor Malik expressed his shock and concern over the incident, vowing to hold those responsible accountable. The victim who lost their life in the shooting has been identified as 27-year-old Lateris Cook from Akron. The wounded individuals, ranging in age from 19 to 43, are currently receiving medical treatment, with at least two reported to be in critical condition.
Prior to the shooting, officers had responded to noise complaints at the party and attempted to disperse the crowd. However, their efforts were unsuccessful as many partygoers returned to the scene. Subsequently, multiple reports of gunfire were received in the early hours of Sunday morning.
Mayor Malik emphasized the importance of holding individuals accountable for acts of violence in order to ensure community safety. The investigation into the shooting is ongoing, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
