Accident – Death – Obituary News : A tragic incident unfolded in Santan, District 4 of the Gila River Indian Community in Arizona, where a police officer and a woman lost their lives in the line of duty. The officer, identified as Joshua Briese, had been with the Gila River Police Department for less than a year when he responded to a disturbance call involving a large crowd. Unfortunately, multiple gunshots were fired, resulting in Briese and another officer being struck.
The officers were rushed to the hospital, where Briese succumbed to his injuries. The other officer, who remains unidentified, is in serious but stable condition. In addition to the officers, four other individuals were also struck by gunfire, including 23-year-old Alicen Apkaw, who tragically lost her life.
Following the incident, two suspects were apprehended by the FBI’s Phoenix Field Office and the Gila River Police Department. The suspects, a man and a teenage boy, are currently receiving medical care for the injuries they sustained during the shooting.

Joshua Briese, the fallen officer, came from a law enforcement family. His father, David Briese, a former Yellowstone County Sheriff’s Officer, also lost his life in the line of duty in 2006. In the wake of the shooting, the Gila River Indian Community Council took decisive action by implementing a ban on all dances in the community. This measure, aimed at maintaining peace and order, includes strict penalties for those found violating the ban, such as arrest on charges of disorderly misconduct and trespassing.
