Accident – Death – Obituary News : Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News)- Authorities have successfully located the body of the final person who was reported missing following a tragic water emergency on a Minnesota lake more than two weeks ago. The search for the missing Minnesota canoeist came to a close late Monday morning, as confirmed by a news release issued by the St. Louis County Sheriff’s Office.
Search and rescue teams had been tirelessly combing the lake in the Boundary Waters Canoe area since May 18th when the incident occurred. First responders were initially called to Curtain Falls on Iron Lake, located along the Minnesota-Canada border, following a report of a canoe going over the falls. Three of the men involved in the incident were swiftly rescued within a day, with one sustaining serious but non-life-threatening injuries and the other two escaping unharmed.
However, two canoeists, identified as 41-year-old Jesse Melvin Haugen of Cambridge and 40-year-old Reis Melvin Grams of Lino Lakes, remained missing after the initial rescues. On Friday, search and rescue teams reported the recovery of Haugen’s body during operations near Curtain Falls. Flights in and out of the area became available on Monday, and officials reported finding Grams’s body around 10:00 in the morning in an area just west of Curtain Falls. Grams was subsequently flown out of the wilderness to Ely.
The search operation was not without its challenges, as crews battled difficult weather conditions and rising water levels caused by heavy rainfall. A team of 8-12 individuals was involved in the search, utilizing Zodiac boats, canoes, ROV, drones, and K-9 units to scour the area for any signs of the missing individuals. Despite the challenging circumstances, the dedication and perseverance of the search and rescue teams ultimately led to the successful recovery of both missing canoeists.
