Accident – Death – Obituary News :

DEL MAR, Calif. (KGTV) — A 2018 shark attack survivor is reaching out to provide support to Caleb Adams, the man who was recently bitten by a shark off the coast of Del Mar. The incident marks the third shark attack off San Diego County coastlines in the last six years.

Keane Hayes, who survived a shark attack while lobster diving in Encinitas at the age of 13, is now 19 years old and attending college in Colorado. During the summer, he works as a lifeguard for the City of Encinitas.

Reflecting on his own experience, Hayes shared, “It’s definitely like a very full-circle moment. I’ve been working at the beach I got bit at, and one day I was walking on the trails, and I was like, ‘Wow, I almost died over there’.”

Hayes has already reached out to Caleb’s family to offer his support. He mentioned, “We reached out just to give our support and just try to give as many resources as we can.”

The shark attack on Sunday occurred in murky water conditions due to a red tide. Dr. Christopher Lowe from Cal State Long Beach Shark Lab explained that red tides are caused by microscopic plants in the water known as plankton or diatoms. These plants reproduce rapidly, turning the water a brownish red colour.

Dr. Lowe suggested that the red tide conditions may have affected the visibility, potentially causing the shark to mistake Adams for prey.

Hayes acknowledged the rarity of shark attacks and expressed his hope for Adams’ quick recovery. He also mentioned his willingness to support Adams when he is ready to return to the water, saying, “If he wants to go out for a surf or just for like a swim or something, I’m more than open to that. And just take it at your own pace; we’re all different.”
