The distressing incident took place just after 9 p.m. at Hilltop Playground, located near Dean Street and Saratoga Avenue in the Brownsville area of the city.
Initial reports suggest that the girls were playing in the playground while one of their mothers was observing them from a park bench when they tragically became caught in the crossfire.

Two children were injured by gunfire in Brooklyn on Monday night, the police department has confirmed.
Assistant Chief Scott Henderson revealed that a preliminary investigation indicates there may have been two shooters who discharged at least six rounds in the direction where the children were playing.
The 9-year-old girl was struck in the leg, while the 11-year-old sustained a gunshot wound in the back. Both victims were promptly taken to Brookdale Hospital by their family members to receive medical attention for their injuries. The younger girl was later transferred to Maimonides Hospital. Fortunately, both girls are currently in stable condition.

Upon arrival at the scene, officers discovered the victim with a gunshot wound to the chest. Emergency services swiftly transported him to Brookdale Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced deceased.
