According to police reports, the boy and his mother were walking to their car when a woman approached them brandishing a kitchen knife, resulting in a harrowing assault.
The attack took place shortly after 3pm on Monday, sending shockwaves through the community.
Emergency responders swiftly administered first aid to the victims before transporting them from the 27200 block of Lorain Road to St John Medical Center.
The young boy, identified as Julian Wood by the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner, succumbed to his injuries at the hospital. His mother, Margot Wood, aged 38, sustained non-life-threatening wounds and is expected to make a full recovery.
Giant Eagle expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, offering condolences to the victims and their loved ones during this incredibly difficult time.
Suspect Apprehended and Charged
Law enforcement officers apprehended the suspect, Bionca Ellis, as she was still wielding the knife and walking toward Dover Center Road. Ellis, a 32-year-old resident of Cleveland, was taken into custody without resistance and charged with aggravated murder.
She is currently detained at North Olmsted Jail and was scheduled to appear in Rocky River Municipal Court on Tuesday afternoon. Further charges may be brought against Ellis pending a county grand jury review.
Authorities confirmed that the attack was unprovoked, with Ellis having no prior interaction with the victims.
