ORANGE COUNTY, Calif. – A man was taken to the hospital after a rideshare driver reportedly witnessed him assaulting a woman and took action to stop the attack.

On the evening of June 2, at approximately 7:50 p.m., a rideshare driver was dropping off a passenger in the 7100 block of Custer Way in the city of Stanton when he observed a man assaulting a woman nearby, according to the Orange County Sheriff’s Office.

Details of the events that transpired next remain unclear, but authorities have confirmed that the rideshare driver shot the suspect in response to the assault.

The 20-year-old man who was assaulting the woman sustained a gunshot wound and was transported to the hospital in critical but stable condition.

Further information regarding the shooting and the circumstances leading up to it have not been disclosed by officials.

The rideshare driver involved in the incident stayed at the scene and promptly reported the shooting to dispatch. He cooperated with investigators during questioning and was subsequently released. Potential charges against him are pending further investigation, as stated by the sheriff’s office.
