MELBOURNE, Fla. — The Florida Highway Patrol has reported that a man has been taken into custody on suspicion of driving under the influence following a crash in Brevard County that left three individuals injured, including a one-year-old child.

The incident took place on Friday around 11:15 p.m. on Interstate 95 in Melbourne. According to troopers, the driver of a Lexus failed to slow down as it approached a Toyota, with the Toyota allegedly traveling at speeds exceeding 100 miles per hour in a 70-mile-per-hour zone.

An arrest report indicated that the Lexus rear-ended the Toyota, causing the latter vehicle to veer off the road and overturn, ultimately colliding with a traffic sign.

Following the crash, the driver of the Lexus, identified as Thomas Roberts Jr., was found to have bloodshot eyes, a strong smell of alcohol on his breath, and slurred speech. Subsequent sobriety tests led to Roberts Jr.’s arrest on suspicion of driving under the influence.

Of the individuals injured in the crash, the one-year-old child was airlifted to Arnold Palmer Hospital and is currently listed as alert and stable. Another passenger was taken to Holmes Regional Medical Center with a trauma status, sustaining a head injury, broken clavicle, and broken leg. A third passenger was transported to Viera Hospital for treatment.

Roberts Jr. has been detained at Brevard County Jail and is facing multiple charges related to driving under the influence.
