INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) — In the early hours of Monday morning, a dramatic standoff unfolded at an apartment complex in Fort Wayne, resulting in the arrest of a wanted man following a domestic dispute.
Domestic Dispute Leads to Standoff
According to a press release, authorities received a distressing text message from a female individual reporting a domestic altercation involving a man identified as Tavon Underwood, aged 26.
Emergency services swiftly responded to the call, working diligently to pinpoint the exact location of the distressed female, who was reportedly trapped inside an apartment on Northgate Boulevard.
Rescue Operation
Upon locating the apartment, officers successfully evacuated the female and a child who were inside, ensuring their safety. It was later revealed that the female had been held against her will by Underwood.
While the other adults inside the apartment managed to exit without any issues, Underwood remained inside, prompting a more intense police response due to an outstanding warrant from a separate criminal investigation.
Police Intervention
The Fort Wayne Police Department’s Emergency Services Team, Crisis Response Team, and Air Support Unit were swiftly deployed to the scene to handle the situation as Underwood refused to comply with commands to surrender.
After a brief standoff, lasting until 7:35 a.m., Underwood was eventually apprehended without further incident. He was subsequently arrested for his active warrant, which included charges of violating probation, possession of a narcotic drug, and a new criminal charge of criminal confinement, classified as a level 6 felony.
