(WANE) – A dramatic standoff unfolded at Canterbury Green Apartments in Fort Wayne on Monday morning, culminating in the arrest of a wanted man following a text message to emergency dispatchers. The incident, which lasted for several hours, involved a domestic dispute and a felony warrant.
Domestic Dispute Leads to Standoff
The tense situation began when a woman sent a text message to 911 reporting a domestic dispute with a man later identified as 26-year-old Tavon Malik Underwood. Law enforcement officers quickly responded to the scene at the apartment complex, located in the 2800 block of Northgate Boulevard, to assess the situation.
Upon arrival, officers were able to safely remove the woman and a child from the apartment, where they determined that the woman had been held against her will. Additional adults inside the apartment were also successfully evacuated by law enforcement personnel.

As the situation escalated, Underwood reportedly refused to comply with officer commands to exit the apartment. In response, the Fort Wayne Police Department deployed its Emergency Services and Crisis Response teams, including the SWAT unit, to the scene. After a four-hour standoff, Underwood was eventually taken into custody without further incident at 7:35 a.m. The arrest was made on the basis of an outstanding warrant related to probation violations stemming from a previous conviction for possession of a narcotic.
