Authorities in Howard County, MD have identified Nayyar Abbas Syed, a 61-year-old grandfather, as the suspect in a tragic murder-suicide that took place in Elkridge on Thursday. The incident left four family members dead and one critically injured, while miraculously sparing the life of his 3-month-old granddaughter.
Syed’s Family Members Pronounced Dead
The victims of the shooting were identified as Syed’s wife, Syeda Aalia Nayyar (57), his daughter, Syeda Fatima (25), and his daughter-in-law, Alizey Fatima (33). Syed himself was pronounced dead at St. Agnes hospital, while his son, Muhammad Ali Hamza (31), was rushed to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center in critical condition.
Survival of 3-Month-Old Granddaughter
Despite the tragedy that unfolded, Syed’s 3-month-old granddaughter emerged unharmed from the incident. She underwent a wellness check at the hospital and will be placed in the care of a family member, as confirmed by the Howard County Police Department.
Neighbours Report Gunshots
Police were alerted to the scene on the 6900 block of Norwood Ferry around 10 p.m. on Thursday following reports from concerned neighbours who heard gunshots. Multiple 911 calls and a distress call from Syed himself indicated the severity of the situation. It was revealed that all the victims resided at the same address on Norwood Ferry, while Syed lived elsewhere.
